Program Goals
Because children process information in a variety of ways, Harbour Tugboats
is designed with goals and learning objectives which serve to develop
the whole child, Spirit, Soul, and Body. Each classroom is not only arranged
to accelerate skill level. Teacher observations will focus on HOW
children process information, the strategies they develop for creative
and critical thinking during problem solving, and their selection of enrichment
center activities for talent development within the classroom environment.
Age-appropriate developmental goals and learning objectives are:
TWO’s
- Basic Care
- Guided assistance in hygiene, Handwashing, infection control, Toilet
procedures

- Characteristics: Intelligence, Predicting, Decision Making, Social
Skills, Learning & Academics, Planning & Time Management
- Multi-talent enrichment centers , Screen, Identify, Nurture talents
Learning Enrichment Centers provide opportunity for
students to practice skill development while expanding their interests.
Centers are designed to reinforce lesson objectives and enhance talent
development. Developed from a Multiple-Intelligence theory, in which intelligence
is not measured by a paper-pencil test, each teacher-monitored center
emphasizes a specific strength or combination of strengths regarding how
children solve problems, and the fluency in which they create within various
environments. Howard Gardner, Professor of Education and Co-director of
Project Zero at Harvard University has designated these basic intelligences
as:
Linguistic: Language/Verbal -Rhymes, talkative, word
puzzles, tongue-twisters, letter games
Logical-Mathematical: Advanced reasoning, number patterns,
systematic, sequential puzzles.
Spatial: Designs visual patterns, organizes objects,
takes things apart to reassemble, early recognition of color-line-texture,
thinks in three dimensions, attention to detail, physical space.
Musical: Remembers/composes melodies, taps rhythm patterns,
reproduces accurate pitches, experiments with different sounds.
Bodily-Kinesthetic: Mirrors dance steps, masters physical
skill independently, advanced sensory awareness, processes by touch.
Interpersonal: Prefers group activities, organizes activities
and others, strong sense of justice, expresses feelings openly, meets
own needs through others, other oriented.
Intrapersonal: Independent, resourceful, advanced sense
of humor, confident, risk taker, persistent in personal interest goals,
plays creatively.
Naturalist: Prefers nature, outdoor adventures, space,
wildlife.
Several learning centers may be going on at one time in the classroom.
Under the teacher's observation, children learn concepts from “hands-on
manipulatives,” such as patterning, sequencing (what comes next),
matching, geometric shapes, sizes, spatial relationships, lacing and tying,
weighing and measuring, estimation, counting, number words, beginning
and ending, sounds, more and less comparisons. The materials used for
children to learn these concepts are bright, colorful, and age-appropriate.
No center should have more than two children working at a time. As the
children complete one center, then they will rotate around the room to
the other centers. Enrichment centers are also offered during “quiet
activities.”
Multiple Intelligence learning Centers are described as the following:
- MASTERPIECE CENTER (Spatial/ Bodily Kinesthetic/Naturalist)
Free art activities are coordinated with weekly lessons. Free art paper,
magazines, paint, scissors, crayons, and paint are offered in the art
center. Children create nature scenes, self/family portraits for their
portfolios.
- CONNECT THE BLOCKS (Spatial/Bodily-Kinesthetic/Linguistic/Logical-Mathematical)
In the block center children can build and construct using Lego's, various
wooden and connecting blocks. Miniature people and animals encourage
imagination and communication skills. MATH BLOCKS develop understanding
of numerical concepts, serialization, comparing, counting, sequencing,
and number recognition.
- WISE-ENSTEIN’S LAB (Logical-Mathematical/
Naturalist/Linguistic/Inter-Intrapersonal) Our Lab is a practice center
for reinforcement of Scientific Method equipped with prisms, magnifying
glasses, rocks, shells, sand bags, water balloons, and balancing scales
to encourage discovery and exploring. Teachers also do group science
experiments and activities such as sink/float, observation of ant farms,
plants and seeds, indoor/outdoor nature walks, hair-eye color charts,
shadow size graphs, sea life, weather station, and liquid & solids.
- BALANCING ACT (Bodily-Kinesthetic/Logical-Mathematical)Using
the balance scales children practice weighing, measuring, and estimating
how many, and how much with various objects such as water, noodles,
beads, or other lesson related objects provided at the center.
- DESIGN-A-WHILE (Spatial/Bodily-Kinesthetic)Children
distinguish between shapes and color recognition while creating freely
or following designs from attribute patterns. This strengthens eye-hand
coordination as well as spatial intelligence for designing with shapes.
- MATCH-A- BEADIE (Logical-Mathematical/Spatial)This
math center in disguise allows children to enjoy sewing and lacing geometric
bead shapes onto a string in various patterns. Using attribute beads
and activity cards children develop sequencing skills. Weekly lessons
can be reinforced using specific shapes and colors.
- IMAGINATION STATION!(Linguistic/Musical/Spatial/Naturalist/Interpersonal/
Intrapersonal) Creative play and imagination provide children opportunities
to enjoy role playing using “donated” hats, shoes, jewelry,
multi-cultural costumes, play money and telephones in this center. We
learn how to set the table and take care of a family, be a doctor, nurse,
business person, teacher, veterinarian, park ranger, work at the bank,
and even have tea with Her Royal Majesty, Queen Esther. Tugboat teachers
also use this opportunity to reinforce proper manners.
- BOOK-BIN (Linguistic/Spatial/Intrapersonal) The
reading center is a quiet place to rest and enjoy a good book. The book
center has a flannel board with felt objects where the children can
create their own stories. Puppets are also in the book center. Each
child is asked to bring photographs of their families at the beginning
of the year. The children make a photo album as part of their Comfort
Kit.
- ALL ABOARD! (Bodily-Kinesthetic/Interpersonal/Spatial/Musical)
Children love train engine sets. Creating various track patterns children
manipulate trains over bridges, through tunnels and underpasses, and
even dramatic train wrecks. Thomas the Tank videos present adventurous
situations for problem-solving and the characters are familiar to the
children.
