HEALTH CARE SCREENING: Our staff nurse screens children upon arrival to assure they enter the center healthy and free of sickness or injury. If a child exhibits signs of illness, it will be determined if the symptoms indicate the need for exclusion until remedied. In the event a child becomes ill and needs to be picked up, the child will be separated from the rest of the children, and rest in the office clinic until a parent arrives.

HEALTH CARE PLAN: An advisory physician, physicians’ assistant, or registered nurse may assist in the development, approval, and periodic review of the facility’s health care plan. Only children who are current on immunizations shall be admitted. Medical records and immunizations will be kept up to date in children’s files.

HEALTH CARE SCREENING-NON-ADMITTANCE: Your child will not be allowed to attend Harbour TugBoats Daycare if symptoms for exclusion persist within a 24-hour period prior to child’s admittance back to school. If your child is unable to participate in the normal activities of the daily schedule, then your child must stay home.

SYMPTOMS FOR EXCLUSION:

  • Fever of 100 degrees F or higher
  • Diarrhea (two or more watery stools within 24 hours)
  • Vomiting on two or more occasions during the past 24 hours
  • A draining rash or sore
  • Eye discharge or Pinkeye
  • Lice or Nits
  • Too tired or ill to participate in normal activities

ILLNESS REPORTS:
Each illness will be recorded on a monthly health report. Parents will be given a copy of this report and the center will maintain a copy. Serious illnesses will be reported to the Department of Social and Health Services (D.S.H.S). Please keep emergency contacts up-dated for the expedient care and comfort of our children.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES: We are required to report communicable diseases to the local Health Department.

HAND WASHING: Hands will be washed before and after meals, before and after bathroom use, after nose blowing or wiping, and after handling an ill child.

TOYS & EQUIPMENT: These will be sterilized daily or as needed with the recommended bleach solution.

ACCIDENTS & INJURIES: First Aid will be administered to a child needing care. Each accident will be recorded on a report. Parents will be given a copy of this report and the center will maintain a copy. Serious accidents will be reported to the Department of Social and Health Services (D.S.H.S).

FIRST AID TRAINING: We require our staff to maintain a current CPR & First Aid Certificate.

REPORTING CHILD ABUSE: Virginia State Law and Licensing requirements states that child care facilities are required to report immediately to the police or Child Protective Services (CPS) any reason to suspect child abuse, neglect, or exploitation. We are not obligated to inform parents/guardians of this report.

GENERAL SAFETY: The safety of each child is foremost important to the employees of Harbour TugBoats Daycare. Therefore, our safety policy is strictly enforced. Parents/Guardians are required to provide car seats for their child if they are less than 3 years of age or weigh less than 40lbs according to Virginia Law. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES, DISASTERS, AND EVACUATION PLAN
MEDICAL EMERGENCY:
We will first call 911, then the parents or guardian will be contacted as soon as possible. If the parent/guardian can not be reached the directions on the enrollment form will be followed. In the event IMMEDIATE medical attention should be required, we will use Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital located at First Colonial. If you have a preference other than the one listed, we will try to accommodate you, if possible. All accidents and illnesses are recorded on a monthly health and accident report.

NATURAL DISASTER PLAN: In the event of a natural disaster, it is the policy of Harbour Tugboats Daycare not to send children home unless conditions are safe. Children may have to remain at school for many hours following a significant earthquake, or sudden severe weather. Parents are requested to supply a “Comfort Kit” for each child within the first month of enrollment.

FIRE DRILLS: Practice drills will be conducted a minimum of once a month and documented on record sheets provided by the state Fire Marshall. Evacuation procedures will be posted on the wall next to classroom exits.

Emergency Evacuation Plan

A. All teachers and staff members must become thoroughly familiar with the Emergency Evacuation Plan and Procedures. In case of emergency, all employees should:

  1. Escort and assist all students, via pre-established exit routes, to the assigned evacuation area. Exit routes will be posted in each team area.
  2. Be prepared, in cases of emergency, to adjust that route and exit via an alternate exit and proceed to the assigned evacuation area.
  3. Exit quickly and orderly. All students in a team should congregate in the assigned team area outside of the building (approximately 75 feet away from the building). Students who are being escorted by support personnel should also be taken to that student's team area.
  4. Be prepared to escort any student who requires special assistance.
  5. All teachers and staff should supervise the students in the designated areas until notified to re-enter the building by an officer of the Fire Department or Program Director. Students should remain calm and orderly. No one should re-enter the building until notified that it is safe to do so the Program Director.

B. All Lead Teachers will serve as assistant fire wardens to:

  1. Ensure that steps A. 1 through A. 5 are followed.
  2. Be accountable for all students and adults on the team. Lead Teachers must take an attendance report and provide the status to the Program Director during the waiting period outside.
  3. Report all non-functioning fire alarm equipment to the Program Director within 24 hours.
